Rising STI Cases in the EU/EEA: Syphilis and Gonorrhoea Trends from the Latest ECDC Reports
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a critical global health challenge, impacting millions annually regardless of geography or economic status. In our commitment to provide reliable, evidence-based insights, we highlight key findings from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control’s (ECDC) Annual Epidemiological Reports for 2023.
Syphilis: An Ongoing Public Health Concern
- Rising Numbers: In 2023, 41,051 confirmed syphilis cases were reported in 29 EU/EEA countries, marking a 13% increase compared to 2022 and a doubling of cases since 2014.
- Gender Disparities: Syphilis predominantly affects men, with approximately seven men diagnosed for every one woman. The highest rates are noted among men aged 25 to 34.
- Impact on MSM: A substantial 72% of syphilis cases were reported among MSM. Nonetheless, there has also been an increase in syphilis cases among women across all age groups.
Gonorrhoea: A Concerning Surge
- Significant Increase: In 2023, nearly 100,000 confirmed cases of gonorrhoea were reported in EU/EEA countries—a 31% rise compared to 2022, and a striking increase of more than 300% compared to 2014.
- Broad Demographic Impact: This surge spans across diverse age groups and demographics, affecting both men who have sex with men (MSM) and heterosexual individuals.
- Notable Trends by Gender: Among women, the highest rates were observed in the 20 to 24 age group, which also saw the steepest increase in 2023 (46%). For men, the most affected age bracket was 25 to 34 years.
These statistics underscore the importance of testing, sustained public health initiatives and targeted awareness campaigns to curb the spread of STIs.
