Urine can be tested for indicators of infection typically via a dipstick test. Indicators include ketones, irregular pH, glucose, nitrite and leucocytes (white blood cells).
Urine test strips don’t determine the specific infectious agent. Common urinary tract infections include Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus saprophyticus; less commonly infections may be caused by Proteus, Klebsiella, Citrobacter, Enterobacter, Pseudomonas, Enterococcus faecalis, Chlamydia or Mycoplasma species.
